Let’s Get Baked: Celebrating World Baking Day!

Who doesn’t love freshly baked artisan bread, flakey savoury pastries, and decadent cookies?

World Baking Day is a celebration of everything baking and takes place on May 17th. Breaking out the mixer and creating sweet treats is nothing new. In fact, we have been baking for nearly fifteen thousand years- that’s a long time!

Whether you surprise a friend or family member with something sweet or prefer to celebrate at home by making your favourite loaf, the third Wednesday in May is the time to bake something tasty.

When is World Baking Day?

World Baking Day is celebrated annually on the seventeenth of May.

If you’re an avid baker, this is the day to show off your skills and spread some ooey-gooey love.

For those who don’t typically get their hands mucked up in flour, this is the perfect day to try something new and see just how fun (and sometimes therapeutic) baking can be.

World Baking Day: A Brief History

It is noted that the first bakers came from the city of Jordan.

Situated at the crossroads of Asia, Europe, and Africa, Jordan was home to the first bakers who made flatbread nearly fifteen thousand years ago!

Known to wrap flatbreads around meats, this could have potentially been the very first pita (or sandwich) known to man.

Fast forward several thousand years, we reach Roman times.

Here we see an explosion of decadent pastries and delicious sweets like lemon cakes take the scene.

That is if you were of noble blood.

During the 1920s, when the first World War was upon us, we saw people getting creative with their rations.

No eggs? No problem!

One hundred years ago, we saw applesauce replace eggs and fat. Today, this technique is still used in vegan baked goods.

Get Baked: How to Celebrate World Baking Day

Infusing cannabis into edibles is nothing new.

Funky weed-brownies have been shared for nearly 70 years.

Today, we are seeing an explosion of legal cannabis edibles take over the recreational market.

In fact, 20% of all legal recreational sales in Canada were edibles.

Gummies, chocolate, and of course baked goods, there isn’t much you can’t infuse.

Cannabutter is by far the most popular method of injecting cannabis into goodies.

Cannabinoids love fat (they are fat-soluble).

Before you go whipping up a batch of your favourite cookies, why not make some homemade cannabutter?

There are two methods: the traditional method, and the automated method.

There are several products on the market that help you automate the cannabis butter-making process.

When it comes to the latter, the Magical Butter machine seems to be the most popular.

Other infusing methods you can try are cannabis coconut oil and cannabis sugar.

Check out Emily Kyle Nutrition for easy-to-follow recipes for cannabis sugar and cannabis coconut oil.
